Department of Geography and Geology, Florida Atlantic Univ., Boca Raton, FL 33431. Cartographic display and statistical associations of socio-economic and demographic characteristics of U.S. counties over the past century. The ‘emptying-out’ of the U.S. heartland, the growth of the periphery, the concentration of the elderly, and other broad socio-economic and demographic spatial patterns and their associations are identified and examined. Causal hypotheses are tested and future trends suggested.
